Project Description

The LeConte Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a 125 MW / 250 MWh utility-scale energy storage facility located in Calexico, Imperial County, California. Interconnected with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), the project strengthens grid reliability and supports California’s ambitious renewable energy targets by storing surplus solar energy and discharging it during periods of high demand or low renewable output.

This design-build EPC project utilized lithium-ion battery technology and was strategically co-located with the Centinela Solar Energy Station to facilitate seamless solar-plus-storage integration. Baker’s scope included the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the site’s medium-voltage switchgear, auxiliary power systems, and fire water storage tank—ensuring operational resilience and safety compliance for 24/7 monitored operation.
